Dr. Bartel is a Professor of Music at the University of Toronto and Director of the Canadian Music Research Centre. He has extensive experience as a music teacher at the elementary and high school levels and as a performing choral conductor, singer, violinist, and guitarist. His research on people’s response to music with special focus on emotional and intellectual response and social psychological connections began in the 1980’s and extended to involvement in research in music and medicine in the early 90’s at Bloorview Kid’s Rehab with rehabilitation of attention deficits resulting from head injuries. His interest in medical research continues with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto in music response research with cochlear implant recipients. Bartel is the scientific designer of the internationally best-selling Music for Your Health series and Sonic Aid albums with Somerset Entertainment. His current interest extends to low frequency sound therapy and music specifically designed for this application.
In education, he was recently lead researcher on the OECTA Ministry of Education Funded Collaborative Learning Communities Project 2009-2010; he conducted with Linda Cameron two national studies on homework: The first, Homework Realities–A National Survey was conducted in 2006-2007, and a second study, Teacher Perspectives on Homework, in 2008; he was Anchor for Evaluation and Research with the Global Education Initiative in Central Asia and Kazakhstan, a 2002 – 2004 UNICEF project; he did research analysis and briefing papers related to Value Added Modeling in Teacher Evaluation for OECTA in preparation for the Ontario International Summit of Education Experts, September 2010; and was consultant with Simcoe County Board of Education (2008 –2010) and the Toronto District School Board (2007- 2008) on homework policy development, policy implementation, and communication strategy.
Dr. Bartel’s research extends to many aspects of music education including national studies of curriculum, student engagement, models of learning, and pedagogic culture. His publications include books, academic and professional papers, and presentations: Refereed 82, Invited 68, Unrefereed 83. 24 scientific music recordings, 60 Children’s music albums, 3 Juno nominations, 5 Platinum albums, and 11 Gold albums.
