Susan O’Neill is Associate Professor in Arts Education at Simon Fraser University. Her interdisciplinary background includes graduate degrees in three disciplines: music performance, psychology and education. She is Senior Editor of the Canadian Music Educators’ (CMEA) Biennial Book Series, Research to Practice, and Editor of the forthcoming volume Personhood and Music Learning. She was formerly Associate Director of the Unit for the Study of Musical Skill and Development, Project Director of Young People and Music Participation, and Director of a graduate program in Music Psychology at Keele University, UK. She has been a Visiting Fellow at the University of Michigan, USA (2001-2003) and was awarded the 2012 Miegunyah Distinguished Visiting Fellowship at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Her international collaborative projects explore young people’s musical and artistic engagement in ways that contribute to expansive learning opportunities, positive values, self-identities, motivation, well-being, learning relationships and cultural understandings. She is has published widely in the fields of music psychology and music education, including contributions to nine edited books published by Oxford University Press. As a flutist, she performs benefit recitals to raise awareness of social justice issues with her husband, pianist Yaroslav Senyshyn. Their most recent CD, Live at Von Kuster Hall (Platon Promotions) is available on iTunes, and they have given lecture-recitals on the topic of performance anxiety at venues across Canada, UK, and USA.
